MOON ZOO CELEBRATES APOLLO 17 - 40 YEARS ON!!
« on: December 06, 2012, 08:58:48 am »
Have you seen the new front page? Exciting eh? There is still lots of science to be done based on the Apollo missions and this is our chance to contribute. All the images on Moon Zoo are now exclusively from the Apollo 17 site from a variety of NACS at all resolutions. Go look - we need help measuring craters - and especially marking boulderiness of those craters - and don't forget Boulder Wars too.

And if that wasn't enough you can follow "live" tweets on Twitter as @moonzoo tweets in real-time + 40 years. You don't need a Twitter account to read the tweets, just click on  @moonzoo or the hashtag #A17 and re-live the final Apollo mission. (That hashtag is also used for occasional traffic tweets but it will all make sense from tomorrow!! :D )

Go Apollo 17!

A couple more pictures of Jack and Gene still suited up in the LM

Lunar module Challenger before docking with the CSM, you can see Cernan in the LM window

Jack Schmitt standing by the Flag with the Earth

Gene Cernan with the Flag

Description of this picture from Lunar Journal
AS17-147-22465 (OF300) ( 75k or 635k )
Gene took this photo on the orbit before final descent. On the final approach, Gene flew Challenger down over the Sculptured Hills (low, knobby hills in sunlight just right of frame center) and out over the valley floor before landing a little north of the Trident group of craters. The CSM with Ron Evans can be seen in the left distance with the South Massif in the background. Henry is the furthermost of the three largish craters at the foot of the North Massif to the right. The labeled version of this frame picks out a few other features for orientation. Compare this view with the CSM Pan Camera frame and note the distance across the valley from Henry to Bear Mountain and the outcrop hill beyond (in shadow here).

Labeled version
