Your images are from Ina - you can see by the coordinates, Latitude: 18.6, Longitude: 5.3

I think this is a faux Ina-like formation and looks like a lunar whale. Quite interesting though!  Located southeast of Maclear crater.

Be sure to check out the large impact at the top of the strip with some type of large trench perhaps carved out by ejecta.

Nice find Tom! This feature looks similar to the features in Hyginus crater: http://forum.moonzoo.org/index.php?topic=50.0

Hi Geoff and Jules,

I have been looking over the photo strip for clues as to why the lunar whale formation evolved as it did and I have a whale of an idea     Currently I am thinking that perhaps the area has a thin, brittle coating of lava that flowed over a harder surface and now easily breaks off when meteors hit.


Here are some broken regolith areas to the left of the whale.





More directly above and to the right of the whale.





And here are some other similar broken regolith higher above the whale.





And is all of this related in some way to the incredible impact/ formation at the top of the photo strip?

This is from a region quite close to "Ina" Judging from the co ordinates mentioned previously. Not sure if this is the sort of thing you are looking for.

The section at the bottom was too interesting not to include, i havent seen that before.

Just had a wider view and it looks like very mixed terrain - both in terms of height and rock type - but not an Ina-like formation. Dramatic scenery around there!

any idea what the white material at the bottom is from?

Paler regions are usually caused by relatively recently exposed material (ie less than 1 billion years ago!) The overlying material is darker by comparison. Will have a closer look at this in wide field for more clues.

You can plonk your actual Ina images over here. Features you come across which are similar to Ina can go in this thread. It would be great to find "another" Ina somewhere...

I don't see any Ina-like features in your last post kodemunkey. Ina is a melt feature - see the first post in this thread for examples.
