For those who are interested, full LROC images can be browsed at the LROC WMS Image Browser website (http://wms.lroc.asu.edu/lroc/).  This is a great site and easy enough for beginners to putter around in.

Beginner instructions for navigating the LROC WMS Image Browser website:
   - Centre and Zoom in on area of interest
   - Click the blue Toggle button in the top left corner of the image area
   - Select the products you want (generally WAC and NAC, primary mission and commissioning phase) and click Update Layers
   - On the right information panel, click the Get Footprint Info radio button
   - Click on the image outline you are interested in seeing
   - Click on the thumbnail (that you are interested in) when it appears below the image area
   - A new browser tab/window will open showing you the full LROC strip you selected. Here you can zoom in, pan, and otherwise navigate to look around.
Really cool!

Now, what I want to know, is there any way to relate the MoonZoo image id numbers to the LROC image numbers? There are already some things I have seen here that I would like to see the full LROC images for.

Edited May 15 to correct typo.

Thanks for this, Irene, I already have a few images that I would like to follow up with this.

I am trying to follow the instructions to find the eroded crater at Longitude: 56.6169 and Latitude: 0.142124 but the product info that Irene sees doesn't show up on my browser.

When I click the Toggle Layers button I get:

LROC NACs
   Commissioning
   Primary Mission

LROC WACs
   Commissioning
   Primary Mission

I don't see preliminary mission.
Still can't find the crater but will keep trying.

Sorry Goeff. That was a brain typo. I meant Primary Mission, not Preliminary Mission.
I will go back and fix my original instructions. Thanks for spotting that.

As to finding the crater, yes that part is very tough. Try looking very carefully at the Lat/Lon coordinates of the image to find where the crater you're looking for should be. And remember to check the right/left Lon info to see whether or not the LROC image is being shown flipped (e.g. left Lon is > right Lon). If it's any consolation, it took me half an hour to find my feature of interest  :)

For those who haven't discovered it yet, if you link through to the interface via My Moon Zoo you will arrive centred on the correct latitude and longitude. You then just need to zoom in...

Hey zookeeperChris, thanks for pointing this out!
I admit, it took me a while to find this, even when I knew it was there. But I finally figured out I had to click the "View more information -->" link on the individual image pop-up. Great!

Now, if only we could figure out a way to do this for the cool images that others are posting on the forums...  My images never seem as interesting as the ones others are posting ;)

Hi zookeeper Chris,

I've been playing with this feature and I have encountered something where I'm not sure if it's "broken" or if this is the way it's supposed to work....
In My Moon Zoo, I click the View more information -->  link
In the new My Moon Zoo window that opens, I click the View in LROC WMS -->  link
This takes me to the LROC WMS Browser. I still have to go through the time-consuming process of finding the appropriate LROC strip. Zooming in doesn't get me to the right place...

Also, I am wondering if it would be possible for us to be taken directly to the specified LROC image instead?

Thanks

I place the mouse in the centre of the LROC WMS Image Map and check the Mouse Position against the Target Coordinates and click to get the footprint. It's getting quicker to find the right strip. And I like that the new more information screen incorporates the LROC strip and shows the image location on it. However.....it still takes me a while to locate the image on the strip (especially when the Moon Zoo images are flipped). Having roving mouse position coordinates on the strip images would be nice.

Oh, Yes. I second that request!!!
Do the owners of the ASU LROC image website pay attention to requests made here? Is there somewhere else we should be making this request to improve our chances of being heard? Let me know, and I'll do it!!

I don't know - that's an LROC thing rather than a Zoo thing. There will be some contact information somewhere. (Makes note to go and investigate...) I've updated the "How to" instructions now filed here for easy reference by the way.

Yes, I saw that. Very good instructions!
