Could use some Daily Zooniverse suggestions...
« on: January 08, 2015, 06:45:21 pm »
Hey Moon Zoo,

I'm working on putting together some upcoming posts for the Daily Zooniverse (daily.zooniverse.org). I could use some particularly cool things to share from Moon Zoo.

Could anyone offer any suggestions of the coolest/most unique things you've all run into lately?

Thank you!!

OK - how's about these?

The Moon Whale:

in Mare Tranquillitatis. We were asked to look out for examples of these sunken depressions because they are interesting (and fairly uncommon) lunar features. The depressions have rough floors and seem devoid of impact craters.

One theory is that they were formed as the result of explosive outgassing which removed the top soil, so (in lunar terms!) they might be geologically young. Then again seeing craters on rough terrain is tricky. We clearly need to go back! ;)

The Ina feature is another example of these depressions:

Another Mare Tranquillitatis treasure - the Lunar Tadpole:

The science team explanation for the appearance of the tail was that:

"At very low angles, the top part of the impactor can shear off and bounce down range. This is the "tail" of our tadpole. Sometimes the pointy part of the main crater faces towards the tail, and sometimes it faces away."

And some good old boulder tracks - bouncing, rolling and sliding down the lunar hills.
