"On April 14th 1970, the Apollo 13 Saturn IVB upper stage impacted the moon north of Mare Cognitum, at -2.55° latitude, -27.88° East longitude. The impact crater, which is roughly 30 meters in diameter, is clearly visible in LROC NAC image M109420042LE. Credit: NASA/Goddard/Arizona State University"

True - you're right, this thread is really for posting possible spacecraft found serendipitously in the Moon Zoo images we are presented with. Just for fun.  However- at least we know what to look out for! Surely we wouldn't miss that one! :o

The Apollo 16 landing site is at the bottom centre/left. Underwhelming but true.  :D

MZ pic, flipped.

Hi, all,

I found this in Boulder Wars and thus couldn't save it as a Favorite, so I bookmarked the information page in my browser:

http://www.moonzoo.org/examine/AMZ40021mx

The thing I'm wondering about is top center, roughly triangular in shape with rays of debris radiating out from it.  Can't tell if it's space debris or a crater.  (I marked it as an "Other.")  Can anyone tell what it is?

Thanks!   :)

Welcome to the Moon. Galactic Momma!  I'm Thornius in Nashville, Tennessee, U.S.A.  Your object appears to be a Fresh White Crater, quite numerous on the Moon.

BTW I dont like such strips with low contrast, mostly dark grey ground (like this forum's background) with craters looking as tiny white rings. Just compare.
This is Luna 20 landing site, strip ID = M119482862R. Here we have crater (1), above it triple crater (2), to the left o_O - formation and right above it - Luna 20 (this is how I searched for it on 5 or 6 strips :D )

And this is strip M111219210LE:

Looks like another terrain! Moreover, its mirrored (o_O formation now is O_o), and big deep (1) crater looks completely fresh white  :o
I just dont get, what affects strip quality so badly - just high lighting angle?

Yes - lighting really can make that much difference. I photograph the Moon and craters visible as dramatic landscapes in one phase practically disappear at full Moon.

Thanks, Thornius & Geoff!   :)  I see it now.  The low contrast had me confused, I guess.  Appreciate the feedback.   :)

It's not - I know it's not - but it's odd.
Thing sticking up from crater edge in top left quadrant.

(right of the white crater (the lower of the two where the ridge forks) at the bottom right of the strip - but the view is no better!)

Here it is jules. ;D Apollo 16.

Just to clarify: jules found the site on an LROC strip using this.
I then hunted for it in the Moon Zoo images. The image has been flipped in Moon Zoo. ;)
