Size and Scale of Crater Survey Images
« on: December 23, 2011, 05:53:36 PM »
Hi Forum, I'm fairly new here and I have a couple of questions about the Crater Survey images that we map. I read somewhere here that you can look up the meters to pixel ratio, what I haven't found is the pixel size (Hight x Width) of the picture I see. I love doing the surveys and find it very interesting, I'd just love to know more about what I'm seeing.

if you go and look at the 'my moon zoo' menu option, it will tell you how many meters per pixel (it goes down to half a meter per pixel). I think that's what you mean?

That is the half of the info that I can find. The other is how many pixels make up the image we look at to search?
If the picture was 2000 x3000 pixels, for instance, I could do the math, and then I could say 'That rock face is so far across or long'

The first incarnation of Moon Zoo had 3 zoom levels and the minimum crater sizes that could be drawn at each level were:

High Zoom = 10m
Med Zoom  = 40m
Low zoom   = 84m

The details of which zoom level had been applied was withheld to avoid bias (some people would take note of it and some wouldn't etc). This time round I haven't had chance to check what details are being made available to us but once the holidays are over I will. There are clumsy, time consuming ways of finding what you want but you never know there may be an easier way now. ;D This release hasn't been well timed for me. ::) Got to go and do Christmas.....

We set the resolution for the new images at full-resolution (~0.5 mpp), 1/3 (~1.5 mpp), and then between 1/9 and 1/13 such that the full width of the NAC strip was reduced to the MZ image slices of 600 pix wide.
