ACT-REACT tool very slow
« on: January 04, 2012, 10:13:24 am »
Anyone else having problems using the ACT-REACT tool?

It is very slow to load images for me. e.g. when I click on this ACT-REACT link I have to wait for at least 15 minutes for the main image to load and sometimes only some of the image loads.
If I start at the ACT-REACT home page ACT-REACT Home and enter the required Latitude/Longitude coordinates, then it works much better until I get above the 10th notch on the zoom control, when it slows down to treacle speed again.

I've tried this on Safari 5.1.2 and Firefox 8.0.1 on MacOS X 10.7.2 and also on Linux (Ubuntu 11.1) with Firefox 8.0

I'll stick to the LROC WMS Image Map tool for now until ACT-REACT is fixed.

I started the Error Console in Safari while it was attempting to display an image from ACT-REACT and get the following error, over and over:

Quote
Failed to load resource: The request timed out.
provweb.exe

If it's trying to run an "exe" file on a Mac it's not going to work. Maybe ACT-REACT is designed for PCs only!

See attachment.

I'm using Lion (10.7.2) - see first post.

I'm beginning to think it's something to do with JavaScript. I turned JavaScript off in Safari but ACT-REACT doesn't work at all in that case.
I've also logged in as a different user and ACT-REACT is still slow.
Will see if I can install another version of JavaScript and test again.

I reinstalled Java for Mac 10.7 and now it appears to be working! Will do some more testing to make sure.

Edit: Spoke too soon - worked O.K. on one link but all the others I've tried are still slow or don't work at all.

Do you have an auto update that may have reloaded your java 10.7.2 ?  The new java update for pc gave me fits ( as others ) .  I think an auto update is why it reloaded it's self onto my pc after I dumped it once .

I don't have auto-update set, I prefer to check manually for updates once a week.

I'm beginning to suspect that it's a problem with the latest Mac OS release (Lion) as others have noticed problems with JavaScript on certain sites. It appears that scripts run faster under Lion and this causes errors on some sites. I'm about to boot into an earlier OS version (10.6.8) and test it on there.

It appears to be a problem with the latest Mac OS, Lion (10.7). I booted into the previous OS, Snow Leopard (10.6.8) and ran the latest Safari and ACT-REACT links load with all images complete in less than a minute.

Will send a bug report to Apple.

I've finally sorted this problem  :) Arfon suggested I try another Mac and see if it still happens so I tried viewing some ACT-REACT images with my MacBook and they worked fine. So I checked the Java preferences on both machines and there was one difference - the "Enable applet plug-in" option was set on my desk top machine but not on my MacBook. Once I turned this off everything was back to normal again and images load in under a minute.
Not sure why the option was set - I don't remember setting it!
