canyons/crevices on the moon
(1/1)
Hrubyn:
What is te source of the canyons/crevices on the moon. What created them, or how they were formed??
Geoff:
Hi Hrubyn and welcome to Moon Zoo.
The closest thing to canyons on the Moon would be rilles and cracks and I guess, valleys between mountains. Also, if the roof of a lava tube collapsed it would form a sort of canyon.
See Hadley Rille for some images of a rille.
There is some interesting stuff in this Alpine Valley which consists of a valley with a rille running down the centre.
As the Moon is no longer geologically active, these rilles and cracks were formed a long time ago by lava flows or the crust cracking when it cooled down.
If you still have questions please ask and we will try and answer them.

There is an article about lunar grabens here. These are formed where tension faults on either side pull apart causing the central region to drop.
